Time for Change - Do you lean in and fight or harness the opportunity?
I honestly believe that life as we know it, our normal of two weeks ago, is going to change. There is no doubt that the COVID-19 virus is affecting everybody in the world. Literally, in the world. And yes, it is terrible and we are scared for our loved ones and our friends. Many of us are worried about our income, our livelihood. You are not alone in this. The world is changing and we need to be prepared to change with it.
The question is are you ready? Are you willing? Are you going to fight it or be creative about it? Be prepared for the possibility that your job will change. The way you work might change. Companies are already moving meetings into the virtual space and many people are required to work remotely in the lockdown period. If you are one of these, then you are lucky because the service you provide can actually be met through remote working and your company would have put all the necessary technology in place.
There are many people out there, who have been selling their services in a face-to-face environment and who are not prepared for this new circumstance at all. You might be one of them. You might be a self-employed independent contractor sitting with your head in your hands, not knowing which way to turn. Be prepared to change. Think about what you do and why you do it and how you can offer it using an online platform. At the moment nothing is clear, there are no set rules, no step by step “How To” manual for times like this. But you have yourself! You have your skill, your very specific talents, and your very specific expertise. How can you leverage yourself, this special human being that you are, to survive and maybe even thrive in these uncertain times?
One thing that I do know about human beings is that we are resilient. We can always figure it out. The how and the why and the what. How are you going to CHANGE to get through this? How are you going to reinvent yourself and your business offering? How can you be doing things differently? What new opportunities could you see if you were really looking for them?
I certainly do not have the answers. I am spending a lot of time, looking at my WHY and my HOW. I have always believed in a serving heart. I am asking myself how I can serve people in this time and also my business going forward. I am looking at all the different on-line platforms and making sure that I am up to date on how they work. I am looking at which of my training courses would be the easiest to offer on-line. What can you be doing in this time?? Don’t waste it.
There is also an upside. Can you imagine, working remotely going forward? Not having to spend hours on the road, facing horrible traffic. Not having to waste all the time but being able to live a more relaxed life, having your office right there where you live. And yes, of course, this will not work for everybody but there is an opportunity here. If you can look at this situation differently maybe your outcome would be different. Embrace the change! Be ready and run towards it.
